Fynbos is the popular generic name for the fine leafed shrubbery that constitutes the major vegetation type in the winter rainfall area of the Western Cape. It is characterised by famous protea, erica and heath or reed families. The smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms, fynbos has the highest number of species per area - 8 500 in all. Hermanus is particularly rich in fynbos species and boasts several endemic and rare varieties. More that 1 600 species have been recorded in the nature reserves surrounding Hermanus, which is more than the whole of the British Isles. Scenic Fernkloof Nature Reserve is the perfect fynbos showcase and is a must-see for all visitors.
